Man-Eating Plants and “Brain Juice” Consuming Femmes Fatales A-Plenty!
Fun collection of camp, “creature feature”, sci-fi b-movies. My favorites are “Cult of the Cobra”: She’s a primitive snake goddess, but when she moves to NYC, suddenly she has a Dior couture wardrobe, complete with veiled hats and glamorous evening gowns! “The Leech Woman”: She discovers a potion that, when mixed with men’s “brain juice”, makes her young, and, similar to the Cobra Goddess, very glamorous! She also becomes very sexually aggressive! (For the 1950’s.) And “The Deadly Mantis”: The female lead in this film has a “serious” job as a photographer for the Museum of Natural History. Yet when she leaves for an arctic expedition, she’s wearing pearls and high heels! These films are fun to watch for many reasons. (Any film where the gown designer is listed in the opening credits, you know is going to be good!) One specific reason with regard to the three I just mentioned is that they are time capsules of cultural and gender norms of the period. In the 1950’s men were “men”. The worst thing a man could have been was a “sissy”. Women were mostly ornamental, whose only end goal was to land a husband (and then become a bored, suburban housewife). What’s interesting as well about the “cobra” and “leech” women, is that while both are femmes fatales who destroy men, it’s their lust and desire for men which is their undoing. Of course movies are all about fantasy and glamour, (the men are handsome and the women pretty) so one cannot take them too seriously. However these films are not “winking” at the audience. The actors are serious in their roles, which gives the films camp appeal.Yes, some of the creatures are a bit “man in a rubber suit”, but it was a good effort for the time. The “Deadly Mantis” is a particularly effective creature design. The print quality is good and the packaging is even well designed and graphically stylish. Recommended for an evening of good-old-fashioned entertainment.

    Good nostalgic sci-fi
The movies arrived on three discs in a flip case inside a box with a slipcover. The movies were clear and not muddy or grainy. There weren’t any freezes and it didn’t seem like they were edited but I can’t say for sure since I had never seen them. The audio was clear and included closed captioning subtitles. The discs were secure in the box. Decide for yourself if the movies are any good but I enjoyed them. There is nothing to offend so everyone can watch.

    Excellent entry into the series…
This is an excellent collection of movies. As the first American horror film to take advantage of Technicolor’s 3 strip process, the colors of Dr. Cyclops pop nicely on modern televisions. Faith Domergue tantalizes as a follower of the Cult of the Lamians, and Edward Platt, years prior to his role of Chief in Get Smart, surprises as the cult leader. Watch out for Maverick’s Jack Kelly as well. If you like The Cat People, this is in a similar vein. The Land Unknown is standard lost world of dinosaurs fair brought up by a solid music contributions from Henry Mancini. The Deadly Mantis was released at the high of the giant bug movies, and suffers by comparison but is still entertaining. Meanwhile, The Leech Woman has a similar plot to the superior Roger Corman film The Wasp Woman. Still, it is a nice little inclusion.Overall the quality of each movie is higher than you may expect. My ONLY complaint is, the three-disc version I ordered has a nice slip case and fold around style case for the film. Unfortunately, they do not match with my regular case version of Volume 1.I would suggest this purchase for fans of schlock and classic horror, and would go as far as to say I it is a nice collection to get non-classic horror friends to watch.

    Good old oldies.
Oh yeah. some creepy crawlies here. The reason I purchased this set is for THE LEECH WOMAN. I always liked this one. Best scene is when she gives her sorry husband the heave-ho in order to get beautiful again. Next, when she has to off the creep when he screams in fear because the beauty wore off. No man would act that way. Believe me you, women have the equipment and could have mange on their faces. The men writing all the crap back in those days proved that they did have any respect for women. Be happy that you in this era because there were no good old days. Women could even be shut away in mental institutes by their men so their men could freely see other women.Dr. Cyclops: slow but interesting when you one’s likes the old movies.Cult of the Cobra: not loaded with the ssssss’s as I was afraid of. I did not intend to watch it but once I began I remembered seeing it years ago. The sssssssss is in shadow only. The Land Unknown: slow, and men acting ridiculous toward the woman. Here’s the reason, us females did not run around nearly nude in those days. Picture the peasants with rakes and pitchforks chasing a young lady down if she wore short shorts in some small town’s.This group sets off for parts unknown within Antarctica but someone else had already crashed there years before and he lost his mind. The ending was nice, they did not leave him behind. The Deadly Mantis: It is the best-made-movie of all of them. Love that mantis. When I was small, my grandma called it the “devil’s riding horse.” So, the ones in charge figure out the claw is from a mantis and go for it. Finally, they trap it in a tunnel and kill it.Now, read this. When I was very young. these movies would make your skin crawl and have you screaming all at once. Science and truth has come a long way since the ’50’s. We know it could never be true. Thank you, Lord, above and guardian angels.

i watched all these movies when i was about 12 or 13 ,i should have been in bed but sneaked down stairs to watch the late night movies, and they did scare me a bit.a good selection of movies starting with a mad doctor he shrinks things ,not his washing,to a deranged woman trying to keep her youth, the cult of the cobra is the secound movie some gi’s witness a secret ceremony and then well you have to watch to find out,the land unknownis next about a navy expidition crashes into a land that is deep under the ocean and full of strange creatures, mayhem.the deadly mantis is a creature feature still worth the popcorn.
