I liked this when I saw it years ago. Holds up pretty well. Some other reviewers said they had trouble with t it skipping etc. I always wipe new dvds down before the first playing so Iâve had no problem. Sometimes Iâd like to reach into the screen and slap a character silly, but am enjoying gulping the series again. Fortunately my fast forward button works fine so I donât have to watch the endless leadin every time.

I purposely bought this newer and more expensive 2020 set because the product images depicted it as being much slimmer packaging than the 2014 set also available on Amazon. It is in fact only slightly slimmer than that 2014 set and I have provided my own photos to give a more accurate representation. Packaging quality is just ok. Box is a little on the flimsy side but does the job. The discs often pop out of place on their own though, which is a little annoying.The video and audio quality overall is perfectly fine, nothing super beautiful to look at or hear, but definitely a noticeable step up from my DVD set of Season 1. Some shots provide nice fine detail, and the 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio is clear with good dynamic range, but surround activity is limited (I don’t feel that the episodes suffer for it though). I’m currently watching Season 4 and I have noticed that the video quality seems to have improved since the earlier seasons.The show itself is just as strong today as it was when it first aired. The late James Gandolfini’s acting was incredible. He created a character that was unlike any gangster character in previous cinematic history; one that was highly complex. Emotionally sensitive and caring, yet a sociopath . Charming and funny, yet short tempered and violent. Blissfully immoral one moment, yet morally conscious the next. But it all seemes to work, and comes across as very believable. That is the biggest reason why this show works so well. All the characters are complex, and not just simple caricatures of scumbags. You’ll hate someone in one instance but later be rooting for them. The whole cast is just perfect in their roles. The stories manage to be relatable too. The only thing I ever find significantly far fetched is the amount of coincidences that happen in the show. Characters constantly run into each other in random places, where in the real world the odds would be slim that they would. I also found it a bit unbelievable to see Tony and his crew putting up Christmas decorations and worrying about who will play Santa at their annual party, in what was clearly an attempt at a heartwarming Christmas special in Season 3. Still though, it was entertaining and did serve its intended purpose of showing the more human side to these characters.Overall, I highly recommend owning this now bona fide classic series on Blu-ray. I know I’m going to revisit it again and again over the years. There’s just so much going on and so many layers that you’ll always find something new to appreciate. Definitely one of the best series of all time and one of the most riveting depictions of the mafia. Packaging wise, I’d say this particular edition is only slightly better than the 2014 one, and you might be better off just buying the cheaper of the two.
