The absolute BEST bang for your buck, entry level 4K player with Dolby Vision capabilities!
Recently, my girlfriend and I decided it was time to upgrade our “living room movie theater”. First up was a new TV. I’d always heard fantastic things about OLED, so I decided it was time. I bought a 65″ LG C3 to pair with our already existing surround sound system. I’ll never be able to go back to another kind of TV. I’m a big physical media guy, and this was our first 4K TV, so next up was a 4K player. Trying to find a reasonably priced unit proved to be more difficult than I ever thought it’d be. It had to support multiple formats and that’s where you start to run into issues. Most players with those capabilities tend to start in the $500 range. I first went with a Sony UBP-X700M. It seemed to work fine until it started to freeze during disc playback. Did some more research and learned this is a problem that’s well known in the home theater community. I immediately returned it for a refund. Initially, I thought I was going to have to fork over another $250 to grab a Panasonic DP-UB820 (the most positively reviewed player under $600) until I came across this listing. Apparently, this player’s been available in other countries for quite a while but has just hit the market here in the United States. I’m quite thankful I got into this when I did or else I would’ve spent so much more. There’s not a lot of bells and whistles here, but that’s perfectly fine with me. I use my LG TV’s apps and such. I bought this player for my 4K/blu-ray discs and, for that purpose, this thing’s fantastic. It supports Dolby Vision (lots of players in this price range don’t) and HDR10+. It also features 2 HDMI ports to separate the audio and video signals. Doesn’t feel like it’s made from the strongest of materials, so I definitely wouldn’t stack anything on top of it. If you’re just getting into this whole home theater thing, this is literally the best there is right now.

READ THIS if your eject button doesn’t work
***If the eject button doesn’t work, make sure to unplug the Ethernet cable from the unit.*** For some reason having it plugged in bugs out the eject button on the unit when you try to close the tray. Unplugging it will resolve the issue, it doesn’t have any smart features so you really don’t need Ethernet plugged in.Otherwise a pretty barebones but decent unit, as it supports both Atmos and Dolby vision, with an affordable price. Runs quiet and smooth, no complaints after the eject button issue is resolved. It’s also pretty cheap looking but it hides in my TV stand so who cares.

    Great Panasonic 4K Player
This has Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for a great price! No need for smart features since most newer TVs have them anyway. Only get the UB820 (the more expensive model) if you need up-scaling, HDR optimization, or you want the smart features. Those are pretty much the only differences between this model and the higher end UB820 model.

    Very nice
If you want a Dolby Vision player this is more than sufficient.

  5. Vesmic

    Massively disappointing
I wanted a simple blu ray player that just plays discs. This can’t even do that right. Disc tray is already having issues. Have to power cycle to get the tray open. It only closes if you physically push the tray. This is absolutely pathetic. Will be returning this absolute junk.

Decent no frills 4k UHD/Blu Ray Player
Very simple 4k player with very few features. I was able to play a 20 year old SD DVD on this thing and while the player itself doesn’t upscale, my TV did and it looked pretty good. For testing in 4k I watched Pulp Fiction UHD Disc on this and it looked simply amazing. I noticed details I had never seen before like the pack of Drum on the table in Mia’s Wallace’s house. I’ve seen this film countless times and never noticed it.The player itself is extremely simple. There are only two buttons, power and eject, kind of awkwardly placed on the top for some reason. Fortunately there is also an open/close button on the remote for opening the tray because the top placed buttons are hard to see in my entertainment center. The remote is equally simple with basic number keys, nav buttons, top menu and your standard video controls. No backlight or anything like that. Not much to talk about there. The player supports ethernet, but has no WiFi capability. This probably makes sense because there is no support for apps or any other “smart” features. Presumably the ethernet is for getting firmware updates. Other than that there is little need for internet connectivity. I’ve never hooked it up.I had some issues getting Dolby Audio working with my eArc sound bar over HDMI. Initially only my front speakers were outputting audio. I ended up turning off BD-Secondary Audio in the settings and that seemed to improve things. I was able to get 5.1 surround sound working, or at least all my speakers were now outputting sound, but the player never showed a Dolby Audio icon on startup (it showed Dolby Vision) and was still reporting 2.1ch audio as the output.I’m not sure exactly what’s going on there but the audio sounded okay, if not a bit on the low end volume wise. I’ll admit I’m a bit in over my head with all these new Audio standards so it’s entirely possible I’m either doing something stupid or it’s incompatible with my sound bar. Make sure to do some research to make sure this supports your hardware.I will have to experiment more with this, but my current sound bar is only a temporary solution. I plan on upgrading to a newer receiver soon so I haven’t put much time into solving this. This player includes a second audio out HDMI port which I might be the key to getting Dolby Audio working.Overall I think this is a worthy UHD player if all you don’t care about any bells and whistles. I have no need for “smart” apps in my player as they always run slowly and I have one hundred other ways to run apps on my TV so this is no big deal to me. I don’t watch a ton of Physical media these days but as I start to take my home theater to the next level I’m realizing there is just no better picture currently than UHD on Disc. Even the 4K streaming packages don’t stand up to the clarity from this player.

    Needed a replacement
We needed a replacement for our broken blu ray player, this one worked perfectly. This was easy to set up and it works well. It fits well where we’ve placed it and the operation of it is easy.
