Season 4 of the international hit series Babylon Berlin is set in 1930s Germany, just after the global stock market crash and the Great Depression, and with the Nazis’ march to power in full swing. The story centers on detective Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and his ambitious colleague Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries). As Gereon’s investigations lead him into the fixed fights of the boxing world – and politically, uncomfortably close to Hitler’s militant supporters – Charlotte risks her job to help her homeless sister, who roams the streets of Berlin with a group of young peers, fighting for survival.

    Interesting portrayal of pre-WWII Germany
This is an interesting, fast-paced, suspenseful drama. I’ve watched through episode two of season 4, and it’s left me hanging, wanting to know what comes next. I’m not sure how realistic the cultural scene of Berlin is during the 20s – there’s a lot of sex and drugs – but it’s Berlin, after all, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s pretty accurate. All through it is the development of the political factions and the tension among them. The one thing that really irritated me (and the reason I gave it four stars) was the dubbing. Not only was the acting of the voice over bad, but there were mispronounced and wrong words and bad grammar. Most annoying was the utterly rotten pronunciation of German proper nouns. Oh, and for some reason all the dubbed singing was horrible, as if they were trying to make it bad. If they are going to bother to dub a movie, they should at least do it well.

Wonderful production and crazy storyline not that far from the truth
Wonderfully done. Great production and acting. Bonkers cast of characters during a bonkers time period. Love it.

thankfully can watch the rest of it now…
babylon berlin is a fantastic show – the poltics, intrigue, the excellent acting, the interweaving story lines all work.and while i wasn’t there, the mood of weimar germany rings very truethe other 4 star reviwer comment on the dubbing and in this case i must agree.i assume it has something to do with netflix dropping it and the radical change in the financial structure of the show from seasons 3 to 4 (note to person who just started watching – start from the beginning) but it is true, it’s far from seamless and some voices seem differentthat being said, it’s still babylon berlin and its still one of the best things one.

If you don’t like the dubbing, watch with subtitles!
This is an “anticipatory” review, as I’ve already watched seasons 1-3, found them phenomenal, and expect the same from season 4. But I just had to respond to two early reviewers who complained about the dubbing of S4 (into English, I assume). Look, people, if you don’t like the English dubbing, then, for Pete’s sake, watch it with English subtitles! That’s really the best – and most aesthetically “correct” – way to watch t.v. or movies that are spoken in a language you don’t know.
