This pretty little gadget is clearly like a so-waited Birthday-gift!
I live in Hungary (Eastern-Europe), and already have a 4K UHD Blu-ray player from an other Japanese electronic equipment producer. But that player plays only European B2 Blu-ray and DVD 2 region coded Discs – fortunately the 4K Discs don’t have region code!I have a bit special taste in movies, because usually I don’t care mainstream productions or cult-films – just some. But the movie distribution (on disc), is total mess, and a hardly understandable process. For example: “Madame Bovary” (Mia Wasikowska), on Blu-ray Disc, released at US 2 years earlier than in Europe, or “Rust Creek” (Hermione Corfield), is released on BD just in the USA. Finally, my third favourite actress (beside Mia Wasikowska and Saoirse Ronan), Kate Lyn Sheil’s movies are barely available at my continent. Therefore I need to buy movies from America, or just now Australia! But US released movies have A1 BD and DVD 1, Australian released have DVD 4 region code. So, I had no choice, I must bought a region-code-free Blu-ray player, which I got only in the USA.This unit is the most simple in SONY’s budget player range. A small, lightweight, rectangular box, with hidden tray, two button (on/off and open/close), an USB port on front – there’s no display. On rear: connector for external power supply, a single HDMI, an ethernet socket (for smart functions which I don’t use), and a coaxial-digital (audio) output. Latter was important to me, cause without this, there would have been no sound for my stereo setup. I needed some accessories: US/EU connector adapter (the unit works with all voltage), coax-digital cable, DAC, RCA cable-pair, but after I bought and connected everything, a miracle happened: I could watch my American Discs! This is an used unit (demo-player by the seller), but I got it pristine condition and for friendly price ($89). The configuration is fast with the simple menu. The player reading Discs in no time. But most important test is the picture quality, what is better than I expected from a budget player! With Blu-ray Discs almost perfect – my UHD-BD player is more sophisticated unit, and it cost four times as much, than the SONY, but latter yet competitive, compared the more expensive player. This is true also with DVD, considering the lower-resolution of the format. (The unit doesn’t have upscaler, but my TV has one, therefore anything alright!)My sole problem is the remote. I don’t have big hands or sausage-fingers, but the remote yet too small, with tiny buttons – for example the pause-button, which I frequently use. And, I can’t understand, why not has all Blu-ray/DVD player backlit remote in the 21th century? If you want some like these, you can pay $600 or more! It’s simply ridiculous. In sum: this is a little box, with full of surprise! Simple, practical, competitive compared also higher quality standard. Finally solved my old problem with region codes. This purchase was one of the most smart decision of my life! I’m so pleased with this gadget. Recommended for all, who like simple, and good-working things.

Does exactly what it’s advertised to do
I needed this to be able to play the several dozen DVDs (some blu ray, some pre-blu ray), and this machine does exactly that. Turns out to be the exact same Sony DVD player I recently purchased for US produced DVDs. (when I ordered that one, my old PAL/NTSC player still worked). Therein lies the rub. I have to put a cardboard box over the unit I’m not using else the remote controls will operate both devices at the same time. Could I just unplug the US version of the DVD player? Yes, I could. But I find it convenient to have both players loaded with DVDs, especially when the DVDs contain multiple episodes of a TV series. Covering the one I’m not using is not a big deal. Both reside behind cabinet doors that for the most part do the same job. But if I aim the remote at the wrong angle, I still run the risk of firing up both players simultaneously. So, the cardboard box method is still useful to me.Streaming is okay if you don’t mind paying over and over again for the same viewing. If you have a library of DVDs, this is the way to go.This unit plays US and German made DVDs. You don’t need a second unit.

Does NOT do what it’s supposed to!!!
You know good old Amazon, you can’t leave a review without giving at least one star, so this player gets one for simply functioning at all. This player DOES NOT play dvds or blu rays from other countries! It is falsely advertised as doing so. It will only play US formatted disc’s. While the seller is not responsible for manufacturing the player, I still hold them accountable to some degree for selling something that in no way indicates that it does what it’s advertised to do. It’s as if someone just MADE UP the product description for this player. If anyone can tell me what player will ACTUALLY work with Non US region movies and series, please I would love to know.

Simple and works.
Does exactly what it says it does (which is far from commonplace these days).Plays DVDs from any region, and has an external 12V power brick that, although not listed as multi-voltage, should be easily replaceable if you find yourself in a locale with 220V power. The interface is stock Sony, unlike some other vendors where the entire firmware & UI has been replaced with some generic junk.Definitely recommend this!

Works great. Make sure you read the instructions if you are looking to use the other country selections. Had CD’s for Europe and this was able to play them.

Though a bit costlier than normal Bluray players, this one has been modded to play all region DVDs out of the box, and to select a colour button on the remote for Bluray region selection (while the tray is open, before closing the tray to play).

Received my Sony BDP-S1700 (Region Free) BluRay/DVD player the other day and got it up and running quickly and without any problems – I was replacing a defective player so I simply popped the HDMI that was already in place into the rear of the new unit – plugged it in – and fired up few discs to see how it worked: Happy to report that it was generally fine!A couple of things to note:1) The specs for the player (on Amazon) seemed to indicate that the player did NOT have a ‘remote control’ included: This is incorrect! – the player DOES have a remote control (and batteries!) included in the package! 2) I would reiterate the comments from another reviewer that you must read the ‘extra’ page of instructions that relate specifically to playing BluRay discs from ‘foreign’ REGIONS! All regular DVD format discs, from ANY region, will play automatically – but – BluRay discs from other than Zone A regions must be set to play manually via a few simple moves on the remote keypad! There are colour coded keys that represent the 3 basic regions (A,B,&C) and the proper one for the disc to be viewed must be selected before inserting/playing!I give credit to Sony for providing an actual printed instruction manual with its player. The info for the region free BluRay play is, however, on a separate sheet of paper and might be missed! Perhaps the reason that some reviewers were unhappy with the region free aspects was because they didn’t see this important information?! Regardless – I was able to play regular DVDs and Region A and B BluRay discs successfully within 15 minutes of setting the unit up. This is a pretty ‘bare-bones’ unit but it does the job and I’m happy with it.

Received the product quickly and as intended. Installation was quick and easy to understand. Switching region BEFORE putting in the blu-ray or DVD works fine with me. I’m happy with the fact that it does what is should. I tried a Region B movie and it worked great. There is only one thing that ticks me off and it’s the fact that the product was previously opened. I paid full price for a NEW UNOPENED PRODUCT. The box was in a bad shape (see pictures). There are tape that were previously removed and damaged the box (see top opening photo). It also had fingerprints on the product which should be a SEALED box.Just adding that I asked Amazon to over package this product and the Amazon packaging was NOT damaged. So this was damaged prior shipping.I am giving 3 stars for the Seller and 5 for the product itself.
