In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won— and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Give it a chance. Kevin won’t let us down
Guys look I know the first one’s 3 hours but let me tell you something 3 hours never flew by that fast I mean the first hour and a half is super intense. It also sets the groundwork for a lot of different story arcs that are happening here but remember that there’s other movies coming to where this becomes an entire saga. So when you have 3 hours just kick back and watch this and enjoy it for what it is. Is this dances with wolves. No.b dances with wolves was something amazing something incredible just like Kevin has done with Field of Dreams and Bull Durham and Swing Vote. One thing to remember too is that we’re probably not going to see this kind of epic movie ever again. look at all the joy and excellence that he’s brought us in other things. The balls that the man has to come out and do this I mean who else has done this what other big time actor has done with Kevin Costner has done which is to put his money where his mouth is and finance films and have the balls to do a four-part western about America I mean come on you got to at least give the man cred for that and give it a chance and just trust me all right just kick back and watch the movie okay.Just kick back and watch the movie seriously leave the judgments behind and everything and just watch it for what it is and let’s reserve our judgments for when we finally see the entire thing for what it is because remember this first movie is just a launching point for a much larger story.Give the man a chance. He’s trying to do something here for us and I think we need to give them the opportunity to do so.

    A masterpiece in the making
Horizon is a masterpiece in the making. Beautiful cinematography, many interesting character arcs going on, and an epic-scale story that brings history alive. Lots to love about this movie. Reminds me of the old Allan Eckert novels that achieved the same effect, or Lonesome Dove, in that you feel like you are part of the generation that first pioneered the West, that generation that was the first to arrive when its only inhabitants were the Native Americans. And this story reflects the complicated reality of those years. Costner and his writers, like Eckert and McMurty, are realistic in their depictions of people from that era. There were good settlers, and there were some unsavory criminals mixed in among them. Likewise, among the Native Americans, there were some out for blood and war and plunder; and then there were those who were peaceful. There were Native Americans living among the settlers peacefully, and there were settlers living with the Native Americans. Further, there were those with mixed blood living on either side. This is accurate history. It was not a simplistic case of “cowboys and Indians.” Life is much more complicated, and history is as well. The writers also make no attempt to apply modern values to those times, and I respect that the try to tell it “as it was.” Instead, the story is based on characters immersed in the Old West in a setting that tries to show us what it was like to be settlers back in the 1800s. Can’t wait to see Part 2. Just ordered this first part to have handy as a refresher before watching the second part. As in any large epic, be it WAR AND PEACE or GAME OF THRONES, there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Even so, I liked all the characters and their different stories. Often when we are forced to follow a lot of stories within stories, some of the stories are better than others and it’s easy to get impatient while you’re waiting for your favorite characters to reappear while others can be downright annoying. Not so in this. All the stories are interesting, and a big part of this is guessing how these characters will all end up connecting up later on as the big story develops. I was surprised this movie did not do better at the box office since everyone I know who has seen this has really enjoyed it. If you like movies like TOMBSTONE and UNFORGIVEN, or similarly realistic westerns, as I do, then this will be another to add to the list of great westerns. I would also say that there are a lot of people out there who just like to trash Costner for whatever reason, which is puzzling because he has turned in some brilliant performances in DANCES WITH WOLVES, THE UNTOUCHABLES, THE BODYGUARD, YELLOWSTONE, etc., so really I would put my money on Costner rather than some unknown internet clown who doesn’t “get it.”

Costner should stay at Yellowstone! Horrible movie.
I love Kevin Costner as an actor but this movie had to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Terrible story line and hard to follow what was going on.

    A disappointment.
I would rather of had Costner stick with Yellowstone. His part was small, his acting not up to par. The casts acting in this movie were mediocre. I was not impressed with the actors. It’s too bad. The flow was not there, it jumped around too much leaving loose ends, the ending up in the air.

It’s a SAGA, not a short story, and it’s incredibly WELL DONE!
When I first heard that KC was doing this movie I was excited. After all, Westerns are right up his alley. But then came the initial slew of reviews. “Beautiful scenery BUT…” I’m sure you’ve read many of them yourself; no need to repeat them here. However, I had to see it. I purchased the Amazon streaming version and watched it yesterday. I kept waiting to see what the naysayers tried to point out, but it never came. Are there lots of story lines and plots? Yup, but so it was during those pioneering days of the western frontier. I could fully understand why KC has done it this way. There’s a lot to tell. I’m sure he still had to whittle it down to some of the most important and pivotal stories and plots of the time. The movie is a bit raw at points, but so it was in those days. Is there a conclusion to any of them after the first installment? Nope. Should there have been? I’m not disappointed that there wasn’t. For me, it added to the intrigue. I tend to think KC wants to get it right. That takes time. It’s a big…and important…story to tell. I would suggest that judgement be withheld until the entire symphony plays out. Personally, I’m quite looking forward to the rest.
